Bowen Yang's SNL Exit: Lorne Michaels Pulled Him Back For a Final Act

Bowen Yang almost left Saturday Night Live before its 51st season. But a personal request from SNL creator Lorne Michaels kept him on for a pivotal transition. Yang, a writer since 2018 and cast member since 2019, had eight seasons under his belt and felt ready to move on.
He revealed during a Variety's Actors on Actors interview that he didn't feel "central" to the show. "I never played the dad or the straight-man teacher. I was always kind of there as the seasoning," he explained. He believed the show was in capable hands with newer talent like James Austin Johnson and Andrew Dismukes, noting their strong performances.
However, Michaels had other plans. "He was just like, 'Listen, you should come back. These are the people I've hired. It's a lot of new kids... You should be there to set an example for them,'" Yang recounted. This was the first time Yang felt such a direct, personal plea from the SNL patriarch. "Someone who built this thing... being like, 'I need you.' I'm like, 'I'm not going to turn that down.'" Yang eventually departed midway through Season 51, having fulfilled his role as a bridge for the new generation.
