Dara-san of Reiwa: A Monster Girl Romance That Can't Decide What It Wants To Be

Dara-san of Reiwa often feels like two manga haphazardly stitched together, much like its eponymous monstrous central character. This series dives headfirst into the popular monster girl romance subgenre, introducing us to Dara-san, a terrifying creature disguised as a normal high school student, and her unassuming human love interest, Hoshino. It's a setup ripe with comedic and heartwarming potential. So why does it fall so flat?

The manga struggles immensely with its identity. One moment, we're treated to charming, if repetitive, slice-of-life antics and budding romance between the sweet Hoshino and the awkwardly adorable Dara-san. The next, jarring horror elements burst forth, reminding us of Dara-san's true, terrifying nature. This tonal whiplash isn't a clever subversion; it's just messy. The horror rarely builds tension, and the romance often loses its delicate thread amidst the sudden shifts.

Pacing is another major issue. The story meanders, recycling gags about Dara-san's monstrous instincts nearly revealing her identity. This quickly becomes tiresome.
