DGA Deal Prioritizes Career Directors, Imposes Strict AI Safeguards

Forget actors easily stepping behind the camera to direct their own shows—the DGA just made it a lot tougher. The Directors Guild of America's National Board unanimously approved a new four-year deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). While the DGA celebrates major wins for members, one clause stands out: it will limit episodic directing opportunities for those without a directing track record who are already employed in other capacities on a series.

This directly targets actors, writers, or other crew members trying to step behind the camera. It’s a clear move to "preserve valuable episodic directing slots for career directors." This provision is a significant shift, prioritizing established directing careers over cross-disciplinary creative exploration. But that's not all. The deal also brings critical AI safeguards. It explicitly renews the stipulation that work must be performed by a person, and establishes a director's control over AI-generated footage.
