Eisner-Winning "Sex Criminals" Series Adds Ayden Mayeri, Ashleigh Cummings

The long-gestating live-action adaptation of Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky's Eisner-winning comic Sex Criminals just got a significant casting boost. Ayden Mayeri and Ashleigh Cummings are joining the Prime Video series, pushing the wild premise one step closer to reality.
Mayeri (Mr. Throwback) steps into a series regular role as Rachel, Suze's best friend. Cummings (Citadel) will play Charlene, Jon's younger sister, in a recurring capacity. They join an already exciting cast featuring Imogen Poots as Suze and John Reynolds as Jon. Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon are on board as executive producers, with Nanjiani also taking a recurring role. Nia DaCosta is set to direct the pilot.
For those unfamiliar, Sex Criminals, originally from Image Comics, follows Suze and Jon, who discover they both stop time when they have sex. Their solution? Rob banks, of course. This series has been a decade in the making, and fans have been eagerly anticipating how its unique blend of humor, heart, and explicit themes will translate to the screen. Its 2014 Eisner win for Best New Series set high expectations.
“Its unique blend of humor, heart, and explicit themes makes it a challenging but exciting adaptation.”
Catzye Take
This isn't a typical manga adaptation, but the unique premise and adult themes of Sex Criminals certainly resonate with some of the more daring anime out there. Fans of psychological thrillers or even shows like Odd Taxi, with their quirky heist elements, might find this intriguing. We're curious to see how a live-action series handles such a distinct visual style.
