Franklin Richards Declared Mutant on Magic Card, Setting Up Major Marvel Shift

Did a Magic: The Gathering card just spoil Marvel's next big status quo shift? A new M:TG Marvel Super Heroes expansion card for Franklin Richards — son of the Fantastic Four's Reed Richards and Sue Storm — explicitly labels him a mutant. This isn't just a fun Easter egg; it's a direct contradiction to his current Marvel Comics canon.
For decades, Franklin Richards was Marvel's most powerful Omega-level mutant, a cornerstone of "Days of Future Past" and later, a vital part of Jonathan Hickman's Krakoan era. His importance to mutantkind was undeniable. But then, writer Dan Slott's Fantastic Four run controversially rewrote history. Franklin was declared "never a mutant," his previous status dismissed as "mutant appropriation." This retcon, widely seen as a corporate mandate from the pre-Disney acquisition days when Marvel was actively de-emphasizing mutants due to Fox's film rights, landed with a thud for many fans.
Even within Marvel's editorial ranks, there was dissent. Former X-Men Senior Editor Jordan White openly stated his disagreement with the decision. Current editor Tom Brevoort explained it as an attempt to restore Franklin's original, cosmic ray-induced powers while keeping him separate from Krakoa's mutant nation. Essentially, Marvel tried to put the "Fantastic Four" back in "Fantastic Four."
“A new Magic: The Gathering card for Franklin Richards boldly declares him a mutant, sparking speculation about a major reversal of his status.”

But now, the tides may be turning. This M:TG card drops just ahead of Marvel's upcoming DNX crossover event. This five-issue series by Jed MacKay and Federico Vicentini features the "X-Virus," a devastating plague designed to forcibly transform humanity into mutants. The "Chairman," a twisted Hank McCoy, plans to unleash it.
This setup offers a perfect, in-universe mechanism to restore Franklin's mutant powers, if not his full Krakoan legacy. After all, the original X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover famously revolved around Franklin's mutant status. With the "Avengers Doomsday" event also on the horizon — featuring the Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Doctor Doom — Franklin reclaiming his true identity could be a pivotal moment. Is this M:TG card a sneak peek, or just a wishful shout-out to his original legacy? Fans are ready to find out.
Catzye Take
This move could finally undo one of Marvel's most controversial retcons and give fans back the Omega-level mutant they rooted for. What's interesting is how this impacts the larger narrative around mutant identity and who gets to claim it. Fans should keep a close eye on the DNX event to see if this hint becomes canon.
