Golden Age Gem: National Comics #5 Holds Max Mercury's True Debut and Sharp Political Commentary

Long before he was DC Comics' wise speedster mentor Max Mercury, this pivotal character made his debut as Quicksilver in the pages of National Comics #5. This Golden Age gem, featuring work from legendary creators and a surprisingly deep well of political commentary, is now heading to auction, offering collectors a chance at a piece of underappreciated history.
National Comics #5 didn't just introduce a key speedster; it also expanded on the origin of Quality Comics' Uncle Sam, crafted by none other than Will Eisner. Eisner wasn't pulling any punches. In Uncle Sam's origin, the colonial "Hessian" villains clearly echoed early WWII era Germany. Later in the issue, Sam confronted the Black Legion, a violent KKK offshoot terrorizing the Midwest. Before that, in National Comics #1, he battled the "Purple Shirts," a thinly veiled stand-in for real-life American fascist groups like the Silver Shirts. Eisner used Uncle Sam to directly engage with American extremism and looming global conflicts, injecting timely, potent social commentary into a superhero comic decades before it became common.
The other major draw is Quicksilver, making his first appearance. Created by Jack Cole of Plastic Man fame and Chuck Mazoujian, this early speedster boasted acrobatic powers and even brief bursts of flight. Unlike later heroes, he debuted without an alter ego or a detailed origin story, simply appearing to fight crime. He stood as one of the Golden Age's foundational speedsters, alongside the Flash and Silver Streak.
“This isn't just a first appearance; it's a window into how comics grappled with real-world political struggles.”
Catzye Take
It's always exciting to see how foundational characters evolved. Max Mercury's journey from a generic speedster to a wise elder statesman is a testament to persistent storytelling. Fans of character history and sociopolitical commentary in comics should definitely look into Eisner's early work.
