Illumination Taps Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez for Original Sci-Fi 'Not Alone'

Illumination is going big with its next original project: Not Alone. Set for an April 2027 release, the animated sci-fi adventure boasts a surprising lead voice cast in Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez.
It’s a significant move for Illumination, known for its blockbuster franchises, to invest in an entirely new story with such high-profile talent. Chalamet voices Joe, an introverted rocket mechanic, while Gomez plays Fran, a brilliant astro-botanist developing a plant-fueled rocket. Their professional sparks ignite just as three tiny, unruly aliens crash-land at Joe’s home, desperate to use Fran’s revolutionary invention to escape a zealous-yet-inept officer named Zandro.
The supporting cast is just as impressive. British comedy stalwarts Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan, and Jamie Demetriou voice the adorable alien trio. Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso) steps in as Officer Zandro. Oscar winner Allison Janney and Emmy winner Lamorne Morris also lend their talents.

Catzye Take
This project is a big statement from Illumination. While they've had massive success with established IPs like Mario, seeing them pour resources into an original sci-fi story with A-list live-action stars suggests a broadening ambition. Fans should watch closely to see if this marks a new creative direction for the animation giant.
