Matlock Season 3 Delayed Until 2027: Showrunner Prioritizes Quality and a 'Big Reset'

Fans eager for the next chapter of CBS's Matlock face a significant wait: Season 3 won't hit screens until 2027. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman confirmed the delay, revealing it was a deliberate choice to ensure the highest quality for the procedural drama. After a climactic Season 2 finale that saw Matty, Olympia, and Julian finally take down Senior, Urman felt a substantial narrative reset was crucial.

"We really landed the plane on this," Urman explained, referencing the emotional payoff of the two-hour finale. That conclusion necessitated a longer break to meticulously craft the new story architecture. While acknowledging the disappointment for viewers, Urman emphasized the benefit for the writing team, stating, "Sad for audiences, but actually really good for me and the writers because I want us to plot this new mystery and make sure it's airtight."

Season 3 promises a fresh start. Urman teased a new mystery rooted in "insurance/healthcare," organically emerging from the previous season but distinct enough to feel fresh. The show will explore Julian's story in depth, leveraging Jason Ritter's seamless blend of comedy and drama, with "plenty of emotional stuff to mine" alongside new fun. Even without the full presence of Jacobson Moore, the narrative will maintain forward momentum, pushing beloved characters like Kathy Bates' Matty into new challenges. Urman is resolute about avoiding repetition, insisting that while cases of the week are consistent, character arcs must evolve. This commitment to quality and thoughtful pacing points to a promising, if distant, return.
