Rick and Morty Slams Warner Bros., Delivers Stunning Visuals

Rick and Morty isn't afraid to kill its darlings, but it's even less afraid to kill off corporate synergy. The latest season revealed the show's creative team really didn't enjoy their Space Jam 2 crossover. Past episodes like S06E07 "Full Meta Jackrick" hinted at it, with Rick comparing meta radiation exposure to "ten 'Space Jam' cameos." But S07E06 "Rickfending Your Mort" went further, showing Rick returning from the "Space Jam 2" dimension with body bags. He chillingly claimed the crossover characters "welcomed death" to escape their mandated appearance. It's a brutal, hilarious rejection of brand-building.
This rebellious spirit extended to other corporate jabs. S09E06 "ErickerHead" saw Rick make a pointed remark in the end credits: "Warner wouldn't let us use the real music," referencing a "Looney Tunes"-esque ending. This subtle dig at parent company Warner Bros. Discovery shows the creators pushing back against perceived corporate restrictions, even on something as minor as background music. It’s peak Rick and Morty meta-commentary.
Amidst this defiance, S09E07 "MortGully: The Last Rickforest" delivered a stark contrast. The episode sent Rick and Morty on a surprisingly introspective journey. They attempted to plunder an ancient tree, only to be "reformed" into amoebas. Stripped of their usual power, they were forced to appreciate non-human life cycles. The animation during these evolutionary sequences was nothing short of stunning, a visual highlight of the season.

Catzye Take
This is interesting because it shows the creative team's commitment to their vision, even when it means pushing against studio mandates. Fans will appreciate the meta-commentary and the show's continued ability to deliver both scathing humor and unexpected visual artistry. It's a good sign for the series' future direction.
