Steins;Gate Goes Full Retro: New Game Channels 80s PC Era

Spike Chunsoft just dropped a bombshell for Steins;Gate fans: get ready for Steins;Gate Octet of Shifting Space. But here's the twist – forget the complex visual novel narratives you know. This new entry is a deep dive into retro, designed to look and play like an 80s PC adventure game.
Yes, you read that right. Octet of Shifting Space is an adaptation of an obscure 2011 PC title, reimagined with faithful 8-bit graphics, monochrome monitor options, and genuine FM synthesis and PSG sound chips. This isn't your typical branching dialogue system. Players will use a text parser, typing English commands to navigate the story, just like classic Sierra or LucasArts games.
It’s a bold, almost niche, move for a franchise known for its intricate time-traveling science fiction and character drama. You'll once again step into the shoes of Rintaro Okabe, hunting for the elusive IBN 5100 through the streets of Akihabara alongside the Future Gadget Lab members. Adding to the retro authenticity, series composer Takeshi Abo is personally handling the music.
“Forget modern visual novels; Steins;Gate Octet of Shifting Space is a text parser adventure channeling 1980s PC gaming.”
Catzye Take
This is a truly wild pivot for the Steins;Gate franchise. Fans might be divided, but the commitment to retro authenticity is impressive. It’ll be interesting to see if this niche appeal can capture a wider audience, or if it's purely for the hardcore.
