The Last of Us Season 3 Adds Peter Sarsgaard in Brand-New Role, Druckmann Steps Back

HBO’s acclaimed The Last of Us adaptation is shaking things up for Season 3, tapping Peter Sarsgaard for an entirely original role not found in Naughty Dog’s beloved video games. Sarsgaard will play Amon, a leader within the Seraphites, raising immediate questions about how much the show plans to diverge from the game’s narrative. This is a significant move for a series known for its faithful, yet sometimes controversial, adaptation.
The casting news arrives as production on the third season is underway, expected to continue through late 2026. Sarsgaard isn't the only new face. Michelle Mao and Kyriana Kratter join as series regulars Yara and Lev, two crucial characters from The Last of Us Part II. Clea DuVall will also appear as a Seraphite. Season 2 mainstays Ariela Barer (Mel), Tati Gabrielle (Nora), and Spencer Lord (Owen) are upped to series regulars. Jorge Lendeborg Jr. steps into the role of Manny, replacing Danny Ramirez due to scheduling.
Behind the scenes, Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the show and the original game, confirmed his step back from creative involvement in Season 3. He’s shifting full focus to Naughty Dog’s future projects, including a new game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. This leaves showrunner Craig Mazin at the helm. Mazin expressed excitement for Druckmann’s next venture while reaffirming his commitment to delivering the show fans expect. It’s a major transition, but Mazin has proven he can navigate the complex narrative of The Last of Us Part II.

Catzye Take
Introducing an entirely original character like Amon in Season 3 is a bold move for The Last of Us. Fans will surely be buzzing about what this means for the show's fidelity to Part II's storyline. Neil Druckmann's departure is big, but Craig Mazin has a strong track record, so we're cautiously optimistic for what comes next.
