Also written: comedy manga
Comedy manga built on jokes rather than story, usually in short self-contained chapters. Filed under 33, the teaching.
33The letters of this term total 33 outright — the number of healing, teaching, and devotion to others.
Gag manga (ギャグ漫画) are comedies in which the joke, not the plot, is the unit of storytelling. Chapters are usually self-contained, characters rarely change, and logic, anatomy and continuity bend whenever a punchline needs them to.
Fujio Akatsuka's Tensai Bakabon and the long-running Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo, which ran in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1976 to 2016 and reached 200 volumes, are landmarks of the form. Magazines have long kept at least one gag series in each issue as a change of pace.
Gag manga rely on timing, on the page-turn and the panel, on running jokes, and often on the comedy duo of the boke, who says something absurd, and the tsukkomi, who corrects them, usually with a slap. Art styles often shift abruptly within a chapter, into chibi drawings or sudden detailed realism, for effect.
Many popular series mix gag comedy with action or drama. Gintama is the best-known example of a series that can switch between pure gag chapters and serious arcs.
Set against the Pythagorean table, the term totals 33 exactly — nothing to reduce, which is rare enough to note. The weight sits in “Manga”, which carries 18 on its own and reduces to 9.
The 33 governs healing, teaching, and devotion to others. The reference files it as a transmission. It is a lens rather than a verdict, but it is a consistent one: the 33's devotion to lifting up everyone it touches is the pressure under this entry.
Beneath the 33 sit two smaller figures: 3 in the vowels, 3 in the consonants. The subject wants exactly what it appears to want, which is expression — an unusually undivided reading.
The Teaching asks one thing of everything on it: trace who learned from this and what they did with it. The 33 gives itself away entirely. The teachers here are frequently better remembered than read. The other entries that reduce to 33 are collected on The Teaching.
