Nine completes. Its shelf is the largest in the reference, because most things are eventually finished and the finishing is what gets written about: final chapters, deaths, retirements, the long afterlife of a series that ended before its readers did. Nine is also the number that returns everything it touches to itself in the arithmetic, which is a decent description of a legacy.

Where it overreaches. The 9 sentimentalises. An ending is not automatically a meaning, and the reference tries not to pretend otherwise.
