Oshi

6The Care · 24

Also written: oshi-katsu, oshikatsu, 推し

Your favourite: the performer, character or member of a group you support above all others.

6A 6 by its term: nurturer & harmonizer, and therefore the care.

What it means

Oshi, from a verb meaning "to push" or "to recommend", is the person or character a fan supports above all others: a favourite idol, actor, singer, character or member of a group. Oshi-katsu, "oshi activities", is the practice of supporting them by buying merchandise, attending events and spreading the word.

Where it came from

The term came from idol fandom, where fans of large groups would each choose a favourite member, and spread from there to anime, manga, games and any kind of performer. It is now a common word in everyday Japanese.

In manga

Oshi no Ko takes its title from the word: the hero is reborn as the child of his oshi, an idol he adored. The series explores the relationship between fans and performers, and the industry that profits from it.

Why it matters

The word captures how many fans relate to their favourites: as something to support actively, not just enjoy. It has become central to how Japanese fandom describes itself.

The term by its numbers

Oshi24total24 → 6

The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 24 across 1 word, reducing to 6.

What the 6 brings is responsibility. The reference files it as an obligation. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 6's pull toward responsibility, care, and the people involved.

Heart's Desire 6, Personality 9: the presentation folds back into the want: reckoning in service of responsibility.

The 6 asks you to name the people this was answerable to. The 6 smothers. The same instinct that protects a readership produces the paternalism several of these entries document. The other entries that reduce to 6 are collected on The Care.
