Shōnen-ai

4The Structure · 40

Also written: shonen ai, shounen-ai

The 1970s shōjo stories of love between boys that founded what became boys' love.

4Reduced, this term gives 4. It sits on The Structure with the rest of a structure.

What it means

Shōnen-ai, literally "boy love", was the name for shōjo manga of the 1970s that told romantic stories about relationships between boys and young men. Written by women for a female audience, they are the origin of the genre now called boys' love, or BL.

Where it came from

Artists of the Year 24 Group created the form. Moto Hagio's The Heart of Thomas (1974) and Keiko Takemiya's Kaze to Ki no Uta, which began in 1976, set their stories in European boarding schools, with beautiful boys, intense emotion and themes of love, guilt and loss. The magazine June, launched in 1978, gave the genre a dedicated home.

How it differs from BL

The early shōnen-ai stories were often tragic, set at a distance in Europe or the past, and focused on emotion rather than sex. Later boys' love became more varied, more often contemporary, and more explicit.

Why it matters

Shōnen-ai gave women artists and readers a way to explore love, desire and gender outside the expectations placed on girls. It is one of the most important developments in shōjo history, and its influence on manga and fan culture remains enormous.

The term by its numbers

Shōnen-ai40total40 → 4

Counted letter by letter this term comes to 40 — 4 once reduced.

The reference files it as a structure. The number's contribution is structure, labour, and the building of lasting systems — and with it the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently, which is the thread the reference follows here.

Split the term again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 3 (expression) against a Personality of 1 (initiative) in the consonants — expression underneath, initiative on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.

Read on the 4's terms, this entry asks you to look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
