What it is

Shōnen Jump+ is a manga app and web magazine published by Shueisha, the publisher of Weekly Shōnen Jump. Launched in 2014, it offers digital editions of the print magazine and, more importantly, its own original series, published online first.

How it works

Jump+ publishes new chapters every day of the week, and its original series are not bound by the page counts and schedules of print. It also runs an open platform where amateur creators can post work, and editors use it to find new talent.

Its hits

Many of the most successful manga of the 2020s began on Jump+, including Spy × Family, Kaiju No. 8 and Dandadan. The second part of Chainsaw Man moved there from the print magazine.

Why it matters

Jump+ shows how digital publishing has moved to the centre of the manga industry. A series no longer needs a print magazine to become a major hit, and some of the most talked-about manga are now read first on a phone.

The term by its numbers

Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 45, which folds down to 9. The weight sits in “Shōnen”, which carries 30 on its own and reduces to 3.

Nine is humanitarian & sage — endings, compassion, and the closing of cycles. The reference files it as a completion. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 9's sense of a cycle closing and something being released.

The vowels alone reduce to 5, the consonants to 4. Change underneath, foundation on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
