Weekly Shōnen Sunday
6The Care · 78Also written: Shonen Sunday, Shōnen Sunday
Shogakukan's weekly shōnen manga magazine, launched in 1959 and home to Rumiko Takahashi, Mitsuru Adachi and Frieren.
6Term sums to 78 and reduces to 6 — The Care, where the reference files an obligation.
What it is
Weekly Shōnen Sunday is a weekly manga magazine for boys published by Shogakukan. Its first issue appeared on 17 March 1959, the same day as its rival, Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine, and the two were the first weekly shōnen manga magazines in Japan.
What it publishes
Sunday has always been less dominated by battle manga than its rival Weekly Shōnen Jump. It is particularly associated with romantic comedy and sports: Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura, Ranma ½ and Inuyasha, Mitsuru Adachi's Touch, and the long-running mystery Detective Conan. More recently it has published Frieren.
Its character
Readers often describe Sunday's house style as gentler and more character-driven than Jump's, with stories that leave room for everyday life and slow-building romance. That is a tendency rather than a rule, but it has given the magazine a distinct identity for decades.
Why it matters
As one of the three great weekly shōnen magazines, along with Jump and Magazine, Sunday has shaped what Japanese readers expect from manga for boys, and some of the best-selling artists in the medium built their careers in its pages.
The term by its numbers
Counted letter by letter this term comes to 78 — 6 once reduced. The weight sits in “Shōnen”, which carries 30 on its own and reduces to 3.
The 6 governs care, community, and the weight of duty. The reference files it as an obligation. It is a lens rather than a verdict, but it is a consistent one: the 6's pull toward responsibility, care, and the people involved is the pressure under this entry.
Split the term again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 7 (inquiry) against a Personality of 8 (power) in the consonants — inquiry underneath, power on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The Care asks one thing of everything on it: name the people this was answerable to. The 6 smothers. The same instinct that protects a readership produces the paternalism several of these entries document. The other entries that reduce to 6 are collected on The Care.
