George Morikawa
4The Structure · 76森川 ジョージ
Born 1966
The creator of Hajime no Ippo, the boxing manga he has drawn since 1989.
4Four — foundation. That is the reduction of this name, and the shelf it is read from.
Career
George Morikawa was born in Tokyo in 1966. He worked as an assistant before making his debut in Kodansha's magazines in the 1980s.
The work
Hajime no Ippo, which began in Weekly Shōnen Magazine in 1989, has been his life's work, running for more than three decades and over 140 volumes.
The style
Morikawa's fights are detailed and physical, drawn with a strong sense of motion and impact. He balances them with broad comedy at the gym, and gives his rivals rich backstories.
Why he matters
His work defined boxing manga for a generation. He has been involved with real boxing, including running a gym, and is known for encouraging young manga artists.
The name by its numbers
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 76 across 2 words, reducing to 4. The weight sits in “George”, which carries 39 on its own and reduces to 3.
Four is builder & organizer — structure, labour, and the building of lasting systems. The reference files it as a structure. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently.
Heart's Desire 33, Personality 7: service underneath, inquiry on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The letters give 4; the subject's own figures do not agree. 人格 core is 8, 総格 total is 29, an 11 and born is 1966, a 22. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because the romanisation is a convenience for readers abroad, while the strokes are what the pen name was actually built from.
The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. What the 4 still asks is that you look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
