Hayao Miyazaki is primarily an animation director and a co-founder of Studio Ghibli. His significant manga work is Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, serialised intermittently from 1982 to 1994 in an animation magazine and produced around his film commitments.
The 1984 film adaptation covers only the opening portion of the story and reaches a conclusion the manga does not endorse. The manga continues for a further decade, becoming steadily more political, less certain about its protagonist's moral clarity, and arriving at genuinely uncomfortable conclusions about ecology, purity and engineered salvation.
