Career
Hiroya Oku was born in Fukuoka in 1967. He made his debut in the late 1980s and had his first hit in Young Jump with Hen, a series about romance and sexuality.
The work
Gantz (2000–2013) made him famous. It was followed by Inuyashiki (2014–2017), about a meek old man who is rebuilt as a powerful machine after an alien accident, and Gigant.
The method
Oku was one of the first manga artists to use 3D computer models and photographic reference systematically, building backgrounds, vehicles and props digitally and combining them with drawn figures. His pages have a cinematic, hyper-realistic look.
