Kiyohiko Azuma came from self-published work into commercial serialisation with Azumanga Daioh, a four-panel school comedy, before beginning Yotsuba&! in 2003. Both are comedies with essentially no plot, which is a deliberate position rather than a limitation.
Timing. Azuma's humour is almost entirely structural. It depends on panel rhythm — a pause held one beat longer than expected, a reaction placed just after a page turn, a silent panel where dialogue would be conventional. His work is one of the best available demonstrations that comedy in comics is a matter of layout rather than jokes.
