Natsuki Takaya serialised Fruits Basket from 1998 to 2006 in the shojo magazine Hana to Yume. It became one of the best-selling shojo series ever published and was adapted twice for television.
A premise doing metaphorical work. The zodiac curse reads as light romantic comedy and functions as a fairly direct treatment of inherited family obligation — a structure that provides belonging and damage simultaneously, and which is very difficult to leave.
Abuse written without softening. The controlling head of the family is not redeemed into misunderstanding, and the series is explicit about how abuse is rationalised by those inside it.
Kindness examined rather than admired. Her protagonist's relentless compassion is treated as partly a coping mechanism, with a real cost to the person absorbing everyone else's pain. This is a more sophisticated position than the premise suggests.
Ensemble resolution. She gives a very large cast distinct histories and patterns of damage, and resolves most of them rather than letting them accumulate.
Characteristically shojo — dissolved panel borders, layered figures, tone externalising emotional states. Early volumes are noticeably rougher, and the improvement across the run is marked.
