Career

Nobuyuki Fukumoto was born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1958. He made his name in mahjong manga, a popular genre in specialist magazines, with series such as Ten and Akagi, about a teenage mahjong genius.

The work

Kaiji, which began in Weekly Young Magazine in 1996, became his most famous work, continuing through many sequels and spin-offs. Akagi ran for decades and is a cult classic among mahjong players.

The style

Fukumoto's characters have long, sharp chins and noses, and his backgrounds are filled with the sound effect zawa zawa, a nervous rustling that signals tension. His stories focus on the psychology of gambling: fear, greed, bluff and the moment of decision.

Why he matters

He made the gambling manga a major genre and influenced later death-game stories. His work is often read as a critique of debt and the power of the rich over the poor.

Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 69, which folds down to 6. The weight sits in “Nobuyuki”, which carries 37 on its own and reduces to 1.

What the 6 brings is responsibility. The reference files it as an obligation. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 6's pull toward responsibility, care, and the people involved.

The vowels alone reduce to 3, the consonants to 3. The subject wants exactly what it appears to want, which is expression — an unusually undivided reading.

The letters give 6; the subject's own figures do not agree. 人格 core is 12, a 3, 総格 total is 31, a 4 and born is 1958, a 5. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because the romanisation is a convenience for readers abroad, while the strokes are what the pen name was actually built from.

The 6 asks you to name the people this was answerable to. The 6 smothers. The same instinct that protects a readership produces the paternalism several of these entries document. The other entries that reduce to 6 are collected on The Care.
