Norihiro Yagi

4The Structure · 85

八木 教広

Born 1968

The creator of Claymore and the delinquent comedy Angel Densetsu.

4Four — foundation. That is the reduction of this name, and the shelf it is read from.

Career

Norihiro Yagi was born in 1968. His first major series, Angel Densetsu (1992–2000), in Monthly Shōnen Jump, was a comedy about a kind-hearted boy whose terrifying face makes everyone think he is a delinquent.

The work

Claymore (2001–2014) changed direction completely, into dark fantasy. It became his best-known work and was adapted into a television anime in 2007.

The style

Yagi's art is clean and elegant, and his warriors are drawn with a lean, graceful line that suits fast swordplay. He built a complex world of ranks, factions and secrets, revealed over many years.

Why he matters

Claymore is admired as a dark fantasy with a cast of women warriors, and as a series that kept its world consistent to the end.

The name by its numbers

Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 85, which folds down to 4. The weight sits in “Norihiro”, which carries 61 on its own and reduces to 7.

What the 4 brings is foundation. The reference files it as a structure. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently.

The vowels alone reduce to 4, the consonants to 9. The presentation folds back into the want: reckoning in service of foundation.

The letters give 4; the subject's own figures do not agree. 人格 core is 15, a 6, 総格 total is 22 and born is 1968, a 6. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because the romanisation is a convenience for readers abroad, while the strokes are what the pen name was actually built from.

The 4 asks you to look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
