手塚 治虫
Born 1928
The doctor turned cartoonist whose postwar work set the vocabulary of modern manga and of television anime. Filed under 9, the closing.
9Name sums to 36 and reduces to 9 — The Closing, where the reference files a completion.
Osamu Tezuka was born in 1928 in Toyonaka, Osaka Prefecture, and grew up in Takarazuka. He studied medicine at Osaka University while already publishing manga, and qualified as a physician, but chose comics. His 1947 book New Treasure Island, drawn from a story by Shichima Sakai, sold in huge numbers and showed what cinematic framing and movement could do on the page.
His output was enormous, running to hundreds of thousands of pages. It includes Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, Princess Knight, an early shojo adventure, the medical anthology Black Jack, the multi-volume life of the Buddha, and Phoenix, a cycle of stories across past and future that he regarded as his life's work.
In 1961 he founded the studio Mushi Production, whose 1963 Astro Boy series was the first weekly half-hour animated programme on Japanese television. The cost-cutting methods the studio used to meet that schedule, such as limited animation and reused cels, shaped the industry for decades, for better and worse.
Tezuka is called the "god of manga", a title that overstates how much he invented alone but not his influence. He died in 1989. The Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, one of Japan's major manga awards, is named after him, and generations of creators, including those who reacted against him, worked in the space he defined.
Set against the Pythagorean table, the name totals 36. Reduced, that is 9. The weight sits in “Tezuka”, which carries 21 on its own and reduces to 3.
The reference files it as a completion. The number's contribution is endings, compassion, and the closing of cycles — and with it the 9's sense of a cycle closing and something being released, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Beneath the 9 sit two smaller figures: 1 in the vowels, 8 in the consonants. Initiative underneath, power on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 人格 core is 20, a 2, 総格 total is 30, a 3 and born is 1928, a 2. The title says 9; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
Read on the 9's terms, this entry asks you to work out what survived the ending. The 9 sentimentalises. An ending is not automatically a meaning, and the reference tries not to pretend otherwise. The other entries that reduce to 9 are collected on The Closing.
