Career
Sanpei Shirato was born in Tokyo in 1932, the son of the proletarian painter Toki Okamoto. He worked as a kamishibai artist before drawing for the rental-book manga market, where his ninja epic Ninja Bugei-chō (1959–1962) became a sensation.
The work
In 1964 the magazine Garo was founded largely to publish his Kamui Den. He also created Kamui Gaiden and Sasuke, a ninja story for children that was adapted as an anime.
The style
Shirato's ninja are realistic: their techniques are explained as tricks, science and training rather than magic. His stories are full of history and class conflict, and he drew landscapes and animals with a naturalist's eye.
Why he matters
He shaped the ninja manga and showed that manga could carry serious political and historical ideas. He died in 2021.
