The creator of Assassination Classroom and Neuro, known for strange premises with surprising emotional depth.
9Filed under 9. The Closing takes a completion, and this entry is hands on one.
Career
Yūsei Matsui was born in Saitama Prefecture in 1981. He worked as an assistant to Yoshio Sawai, the creator of the absurdist Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, before making his debut.
The work
His first series, Neuro: Supernatural Detective (2005–2009), was about a demon who feeds on mysteries. Assassination Classroom (2012–2016) made him famous, and The Elusive Samurai, a historical story about a young lord in the fourteenth century who survives by running away, began in 2021.
The style
Matsui takes absurd premises seriously, and hides careful plotting and real emotion under odd designs and comedy. He is known for planning his series' endings in advance.
Why he matters
His work shows how far a Jump series can stretch a strange idea, and his endings are admired for paying off long-planned stories.
The name by its numbers
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 45 across 2 words, reducing to 9. The weight sits in “Yūsei”, which carries 25 on its own and reduces to 7.
What the 9 brings is reckoning. The reference files it as a completion. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 9's sense of a cycle closing and something being released.
Heart's Desire 3, Personality 6: expression underneath, responsibility on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 人格 core is 21, a 3, 総格 total is 37, a 1 and born is 1981, a 1. The title says 9; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
The 9 asks you to work out what survived the ending. The 9 sentimentalises. An ending is not automatically a meaning, and the reference tries not to pretend otherwise. The other entries that reduce to 9 are collected on The Closing.
