Yūsuke Murata

5The Turn · 41

村田 雄介

Born 1978

The artist of Eyeshield 21 and the redrawn One-Punch Man, known for some of the most detailed action art in manga.

5Five — change. That is the reduction of this name, and the shelf it is read from.

Career

Yūsuke Murata was born in 1978. As a young artist he drew Eyeshield 21 (2002–2009) for Weekly Shōnen Jump with the writer Riichirō Inagaki. The series, about a timid boy who becomes the star running back of an American football team, ran for 37 volumes.

The work

A fan of ONE's webcomic, Murata offered to redraw One-Punch Man, and his version began on Shueisha's Tonari no Young Jump in 2012. He has also drawn short works and illustrations, and is known for revising his own chapters heavily before they are collected.

The style

Murata is one of the most technically accomplished artists working in manga. His fight scenes use complex camera movement, enormous splash pages and fine detail, and he can switch from that to a simple comic face in a single panel.

Why he matters

His partnership with ONE showed that an artist could transform a story while respecting it, and his pages are widely studied by other artists for their composition and motion.

The name by its numbers

Yūsuke21Murata20total41 → 5
人格 core17 → 8総格 total28 → 1born1978 → 7

The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 41 across 2 words, reducing to 5. The weight sits in “Yūsuke”, which carries 21 on its own and reduces to 3.

Five is freedom seeker — freedom, disruption, and restless movement. The reference files it as a turn. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 5's restlessness and hunger for change.

Heart's Desire 7, Personality 7: the subject wants exactly what it appears to want, which is inquiry — an unusually undivided reading.

人格 core is 17, an 8, 総格 total is 28, a 1 and born is 1978, a 7 — none of which lands on the 5 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the distance between how a name travels and how it was written.

The 5 moves for the sake of moving. Not every break documented here led anywhere, and the reference says so where it did not. What the 5 still asks is that you ask what was abandoned, and whether it deserved to be. The other entries that reduce to 5 are collected on The Turn.
