What it is

Yoshitoki Ōima's A Silent Voice ran in Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 2013 to 2014 and is complete in seven volumes. Shoya Ishida leads the bullying of Shoko Nishimiya, a deaf transfer student, until the school intervenes and turns on him instead. Years later, isolated and suicidal, he learns sign language and goes looking for her.

How it handles its subject

The series refuses the structure where an apology resolves harm. Shoya's atonement is complicated by the fact that he wants forgiveness partly to relieve himself, and Shoko's response is complicated by a self-blame that predates him. Neither is allowed to be simply the wronged party or simply the offender.

Ōima also gives the bystanders real weight. The classmates who watched, the teacher who did nothing, and the friend who reinvents her own history are drawn with the same seriousness as the leads, which is what keeps the book from being a two-hander about guilt.

The visual device

Faces Shoya cannot bring himself to look at are covered with a large X. As he reconnects, the marks fall away one by one. It is a simple idea executed with discipline — the panel of an X dropping mid-conversation does more than a page of interior monologue would.

What it is about

Communication as effort rather than sentiment. Sign language, lip-reading, notebooks, and mistranslation are all foregrounded, and the series is specific about deafness rather than using it as a metaphor. The emotional argument is that connection requires sustained work from both sides and can still fail.

Note on versions

Kyoto Animation's 2016 film is well regarded but compresses a great deal, particularly the supporting cast's arcs. The manga is the fuller work.
