What it is
Yōichi Takahashi's Captain Tsubasa ran in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1981 to 1988 and was collected in 37 volumes, followed by a long line of sequels. Tsubasa Ozora is an elementary-school boy who lives for football and whose motto is that "the ball is my friend". After moving to the town of Nankatsu he is coached by a former Brazilian international, Roberto Hongō, and the story follows him and his rivals from school tournaments towards the national team.
How it works
Matches are drawn as epic battles. A single game can last for many chapters, with special shots, desperate saves and players who keep going through injury. The pitch seems to stretch to fit the drama, a famous joke among readers, because the series cares about the decisive moment far more than the geometry of the field. Rivals such as the goalkeeper Genzō Wakabayashi and the striker Kojirō Hyūga each get their own history and pride.
A sport in a baseball country
When it began, football was a minor sport in Japan, and baseball dominated. Captain Tsubasa is widely credited with inspiring a generation of Japanese children to take up the game, a decade before the professional J.League was founded in 1993.
Why it matters
The 1983 anime travelled across Europe, Latin America and the Middle East under local names, such as Oliver y Benji in Spain and Holly e Benji in Italy. Professional players, including Alessandro Del Piero and Fernando Torres, have spoken of watching it as children. Few manga have had such a visible effect on how people play a real sport.
The title by its numbers
Set against the Pythagorean table, the title totals 39. Reduced, that is 3. The weight sits in “Captain”, which carries 28 on its own and reduces to 1.
The 3 governs communication, creativity, and the public stage. The reference files it as an act of telling. It is a lens rather than a verdict, but it is a consistent one: the 3's instinct to turn everything into a story worth telling is the pressure under this entry.
Beneath the 3 sit two smaller figures: 7 in the vowels, 5 in the consonants. Inquiry underneath, change on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The letters give 3; the subject's own figures do not agree. 総画 strokes is 29, an 11, volumes is 37, a 1, years serialised is 8 and debut year is 1981, a 1. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because a title is a decision somebody made about the thing, and these are the thing.
The Telling asks one thing of everything on it: watch the technique rather than the plot it is carrying. The 3 talks past the point. Where an entry here runs long, it is usually because the technique was more fun to describe than it was important. The other entries that reduce to 3 are collected on The Telling.
