ちはやふる
A girl discovers competitive karuta, a fast card game built on a classical poetry anthology, and sets out to become the best player in Japan. Read from the structure, as a 4.
Created by
4A 4 by its title: builder & organizer, and therefore the structure.
Yuki Suetsugu's Chihayafuru ran in Kodansha's Be Love from 2007 to 2022 and was collected in 50 volumes. Chihaya Ayase learns competitive karuta from a transfer student as a child, loses touch with him and their friend, and rebuilds the game in high school with a new club and a goal: to become Queen, the top women's title.
Competitive karuta uses the cards of the Hyakunin Isshu, a thirteenth-century anthology of a hundred poems. A reader recites the first part of a poem; players race to strike the card bearing its ending. It demands memory, hearing and physical speed, and Suetsugu makes it as intense as any sport.
The series takes its title from a poem by Ariwara no Narihira, and poems from the anthology run through the story, each explained in context. Readers come away knowing classical verse they might never have met at school.
It won the first Manga Taishō in 2009 and was adapted as an anime and as a series of live-action films. It is widely credited with a surge of interest in competitive karuta in Japan.
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 58, which folds down to 4.
What the 4 brings is foundation. The reference files it as a structure. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently.
The vowels alone reduce to 8, the consonants to 5. Power underneath, change on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
総画 strokes is 14, a 5, volumes is 50, a 5, years serialised is 16, a 7 and debut year is 2007, a 9 — none of which lands on the 4 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the gap between what a work is called and what it is.
The 4 asks you to look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
