4Four — foundation. That is the reduction of this title, and the shelf it is read from.

What it is

Fujiko F. Fujio's Doraemon began in 1969 in several of Shogakukan's monthly magazines for children, each aimed at a different school year, and later in CoroCoro Comic. It ran until its creator's death in 1996, and the main series was collected in 45 volumes. Nobita Nobi is a lazy, unlucky boy who fails at school and sport. His descendant in the 22nd century sends back Doraemon, a blue robot cat, to improve Nobita's future.

How it works

Almost every story follows a pattern. Nobita is bullied by the big Gian or the rich Suneo, or wants to impress Shizuka, and begs Doraemon for help. Doraemon pulls a gadget from his four-dimensional pocket: the door that opens anywhere, the bamboo copter, the time machine in Nobita's desk drawer. Nobita misuses it, and the result is a comic disaster that also carries a small lesson.

The heart

The gadgets are inventive, but the friendship between Doraemon and Nobita is what readers remember. Doraemon is a flawed, emotional friend, afraid of mice and devoted to the sweet pastry dorayaki. The series is gentle about Nobita's failures and patient with his growth.

Why it matters

It is one of the most popular children's manga ever, and its anime, broadcast since 1979, has made Doraemon a national symbol of Japan and a familiar character across Asia. In 2008 Japan named him an anime ambassador. The Fujiko F. Fujio Museum opened in Kawasaki in 2011.

Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 40, which folds down to 4.

Four is builder & organizer — structure, labour, and the building of lasting systems. The reference files it as a structure. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently.

The vowels alone reduce to 9, the consonants to 22. Reckoning underneath, construction on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.

The letters give 4; the subject's own figures do not agree. 総画 strokes is 12, a 3, volumes is 45, a 9, years serialised is 28, a 1 and debut year is 1969, a 7. Where the two part company the reference trusts the figures, because a title is a decision somebody made about the thing, and these are the thing.

The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. What the 4 still asks is that you look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
