Created by
3A 3 by its title: creative communicator, and therefore the telling.
What it is
Suzue Miuchi's Glass Mask began in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume in 1976 and has been collected in 49 volumes, with its ending still unpublished. Maya Kitajima is a poor girl with no looks, no money and no talent anyone can see, except an extraordinary ability to become any role she plays. She is discovered by Chigusa Tsukikage, a once-great actress, who owns the rights to a legendary play, The Crimson Goddess.
How it works
Maya's rival is Ayumi Himekawa, the beautiful, gifted daughter of a famous actress and director, who has worked for everything she has. The two compete through stage plays, films and television towards the right to play the Crimson Goddess. Each arc is built around a performance, and Maya's process of finding a character is described in detail.
The romance
Maya is supported by an anonymous fan who sends her purple roses. He is secretly Masumi Hayami, the cold head of a talent agency who seems to be her enemy. The slow, painful romance between them is one of the most famous in shōjo manga.
Why it matters
It is one of the best-selling shōjo manga ever and a classic of the genre's grand melodrama. It has been adapted as anime, television drama and stage plays, and its intense rivalry and dedication to art remain models for later stories about performers.
The title by its numbers
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 21, which folds down to 3. The weight sits in “Glass”, which carries 13 on its own and reduces to 4.
Three is creative communicator — communication, creativity, and the public stage. The reference files it as an act of telling. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 3's instinct to turn everything into a story worth telling.
The vowels alone reduce to 2, the consonants to 1. Cooperation underneath, initiative on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
総画 strokes is 24, a 6, volumes is 49, a 4 and debut year is 1976, a 5 — none of which lands on the 3 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the gap between what a work is called and what it is.
The 3 talks past the point. Where an entry here runs long, it is usually because the technique was more fun to describe than it was important. What the 3 still asks is that you watch the technique rather than the plot it is carrying. The other entries that reduce to 3 are collected on The Telling.
