4Title sums to 40 and reduces to 4 — The Structure, where the reference files a structure.
What it is
Akihito Tsukushi's Made in Abyss has run on Takeshobo's Web Comic Gamma since 2012. Beside the town of Orth lies the Abyss, an enormous pit whose depths have never been fully explored. Cave Raiders descend into it to recover relics, and are ranked by the colour of their whistles. Riko, an orphan training as a raider, finds a robot boy, Reg, who has no memory, and receives a message that may be from her mother, a legendary raider lost in the depths.
How it works
The Abyss is divided into layers, each with its own landscape and creatures. Its central rule is the Curse: anyone who climbs back up suffers effects that grow worse with depth, from nausea to loss of humanity or death. Going down is easy; coming back may be impossible. Riko and Reg descend anyway, knowing they may never return.
The contrast
Tsukushi draws the characters as rounded, childlike figures and the Abyss with detailed, beautiful landscapes, so the series looks like a gentle adventure. It is not. The children suffer terrible injuries and encounter cruelty, and the contrast between innocence and violence is deliberate, if hard for some readers to bear.
Why it matters
Its worldbuilding, with its layers, relics and curse, is among the most admired in recent manga. Its 2017 anime by Kinema Citrus was a major success, praised especially for its music and art, and brought the series a wide international readership.
The title by its numbers
Counted letter by letter this title comes to 40 — 4 once reduced. The weight sits in “Made”, which carries 14 on its own and reduces to 5.
The reference files it as a structure. The number's contribution is structure, labour, and the building of lasting systems — and with it the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Split the title again and the vowels give a Heart's Desire of 7 (inquiry) against a Personality of 6 (responsibility) in the consonants — inquiry underneath, responsibility on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 総画 strokes is 20, a 2 and debut year is 2012, a 5. The title says 4; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
Read on the 4's terms, this entry asks you to look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
