Chica Umino's March Comes in Like a Lion has run in Young Animal since 2007 and is ongoing. Rei Kiriyama turned professional at fifteen, lives alone, and is functionally depressed. Across the river, the Kawamoto sisters keep insisting he come to dinner.
The series alternates between competitive shogi and domestic life, and the two halves are drawn almost as different comics. The matches are rendered in heavy blacks, water imagery, and abstraction — opponents appear as animals or weather. The Kawamoto scenes are loose, warm, and frequently interrupted by gag panels and food.
The alternation is the design. Rei's illness is legible as the distance between the two modes, and his recovery is measurable by how much the warmth begins to intrude on the shogi pages.
You do not need to understand shogi to read it. Umino consults professionals and the games are real, but the comic explains position through the players' faces and physical exhaustion rather than through notation. What it conveys accurately is what a professional career costs: the money, the rankings, the men in their forties who will never rise again.
Depression, obligation, and being fed by people who have no reason to. The Kawamoto household is not a fantasy of easy family — the sisters carry their own grief and their own precarity — and the series is clear that Rei is receiving care he cannot yet return.
The extended arc about Hina, the middle sister, and a bullying campaign at her school is among the most sustained treatments of the subject in manga, and it is the point where the series stops being gentle. It is also where March is at its best.
It is very long and deliberately slow, and the tonal swings between slapstick and clinical depression do not work for every reader.
