Three young men whose lives have been broken in different ways meet through wheelchair basketball. Filed under 9, the closing.

9Title sums to 18 and reduces to 9 — The Closing, where the reference files a completion.
Takehiko Inoue's Real has run irregularly in Weekly Young Jump since 1999. It follows three young men: Tomomi Nomiya, a dropout who caused a crash that paralysed a girl; Kiyoharu Togawa, a former sprinter who lost a leg to bone cancer and now plays wheelchair basketball with ferocity; and Hisanobu Takahashi, an arrogant school basketball captain paralysed in an accident.
The basketball is thrilling, but the subject is disability, pride and rebuilding. Inoue spends long stretches on rehabilitation, family relationships and the humiliations and small victories of daily life, refusing both pity and easy inspiration.
It is drawn with the realism of Inoue's later work, closer to Vagabond than to Slam Dunk, with bodies rendered in exact physical detail. Wheelchairs, falls and collisions have real weight.
It won an Excellence Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2001 and is regarded as one of the most serious treatments of disability in manga.
Set against the Pythagorean table, the title totals 18. Reduced, that is 9.
The reference files it as a completion. The number's contribution is endings, compassion, and the closing of cycles — and with it the 9's sense of a cycle closing and something being released, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Beneath the 9 sit two smaller figures: 6 in the vowels, 3 in the consonants. Responsibility underneath, expression on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
総画 strokes is 6 and debut year is 1999, a 1 — none of which lands on the 9 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the gap between what a work is called and what it is.
Read on the 9's terms, this entry asks you to work out what survived the ending. The 9 sentimentalises. An ending is not automatically a meaning, and the reference tries not to pretend otherwise. The other entries that reduce to 9 are collected on The Closing.
