What it is
Yūto Suzuki's Sakamoto Days has run in Weekly Shōnen Jump since 2020. Tarō Sakamoto was once the most feared hitman in the underworld. Then he fell in love with a shop assistant, retired, married her and opened a convenience store. Years of happy family life have made him overweight and quiet. But a bounty is put on his head, and assassins start turning up at the shop.
How it works
Sakamoto has promised his wife never to kill again, so he fights using whatever is to hand: cash registers, shopping baskets, chopsticks and the shelves of his own store. He is joined by Shin, a former colleague who can read minds, and others he takes in, and the series grows into a war with the Order, an elite group of killers, and with a mysterious enemy from his past.
The action
Suzuki's fight scenes are among the most inventive in current manga, choreographed panel by panel like action cinema, with improvised weapons and surprising use of space. The domestic comedy of the shop balances the violence, and Sakamoto's devotion to his family drives everything.
Why it matters
It is one of the most popular Jump series of the 2020s and an example of the genre's turn towards adult heroes. A Netflix anime began in 2025.
The title by its numbers
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 36, which folds down to 9. The weight sits in “Sakamoto”, which carries 23 on its own and reduces to 5.
What the 9 brings is reckoning. The reference files it as a completion. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 9's sense of a cycle closing and something being released.
The vowels alone reduce to 6, the consonants to 3. Responsibility underneath, expression on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Debut year is 2020, a 4 — none of which lands on the 9 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the gap between what a work is called and what it is.
The 9 asks you to work out what survived the ending. The 9 sentimentalises. An ending is not automatically a meaning, and the reference tries not to pretend otherwise. The other entries that reduce to 9 are collected on The Closing.
