What it is
Taiyō Matsumoto's Tekkonkinkreet ran in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits from 1993 to 1994 and was collected in 3 volumes. Its title is a child's mispronunciation of "reinforced concrete". In Treasure Town, a crowded, crumbling city, two orphans known as the Cats rule the streets: Kuro, Black, a fierce, street-smart fighter, and Shiro, White, a dreamy, childlike boy who seems to live in another world.
How it works
Yakuza, a mysterious developer who wants to replace the old town with a theme park, and his inhuman assassins threaten the boys' home. As the city changes, Kuro's violence grows and the bond between the two is tested. The story is about the balance between them: each holds what the other lacks.
The art
Matsumoto draws Treasure Town with wobbling perspective, bent buildings and dense, chaotic detail, influenced by European comics as much as by manga. The boys leap between rooftops as if gravity hardly applies, and the city feels alive.
Why it matters
It is one of the key works of alternative manga and of Matsumoto's career. Its 2006 animated film, directed by Michael Arias at Studio 4°C, was celebrated for bringing his distinctive look to the screen.
The title by its numbers
Every letter here carries a digit; together they make 61, which folds down to 7.
Seven is analyst & seeker — analysis, secrecy, and the search for truth. The reference files it as an open question. Read that way, what the entry is really recording is the 7's pull toward the hidden and the unresolved.
The vowels alone reduce to 3, the consonants to 4. Expression underneath, foundation on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Counted another way the answer changes. 総画 strokes is 36, a 9, volumes is 3, years serialised is 2 and debut year is 1993, a 22. The title says 7; the subject says otherwise, and the subject is the harder evidence.
The 7 mistakes withholding for depth. Some works filed here are obscure because they are unfinished, not because they are deep. What the 7 still asks is that you sit with the part that was never explained. The other entries that reduce to 7 are collected on The Inquiry.
