Ahoy Comics Debuts First Kickstarter with Mark Russell's "The Forgotten Divine" and Tom Peyer's Writing Guide

Indie comic powerhouse Ahoy Comics is making a bold move. They've launched their very first Kickstarter campaign, and it's for "The Forgotten Divine," a new satirical sci-fi drama from acclaimed creators Mark Russell and Russ Braun. Even more surprising? Ahoy Editor-in-Chief Tom Peyer, a comic veteran with decades of experience from DC to Hourman, is offering a guide titled "How to Write Comics, Sort Of" alongside the campaign.
"The Forgotten Divine" centers on Rodney Coleman, an unhoused veteran whose mysterious dreams lead him to form a UFO cult. Writer Mark Russell, known for his incisive social commentary, explains the series delves into why people join cults and seek meaning in persecution. Artist Russ Braun calls it a challenging story, visually pushing boundaries. Peyer himself highlights Kickstarter's freedom, promising an "utterly excessive" book, packed with more of Ahoy's signature blend of comics, prose, and cartoons. This shift to crowdfunding offers Ahoy a chance to push creative limits even further, delivering unique stories directly to fans.
“The Forgotten Divine is about why people join cults, assign meaning to mysteries, and find comfort in their own persecution.”
Catzye Take
This marks a significant pivot for Ahoy, a publisher celebrated for its distinct creator-owned vision. Fans should watch this Kickstarter closely, as it could set a new precedent for how indie publishers leverage crowdfunding for bolder, unfiltered narratives.
