Exhausted Chris Pang Accidentally Lands 'Despicable' Role in Hulu's The Season

Chris Pang, known for his charismatic turns in Crazy Rich Asians and Charlie's Angels, landed his latest role in Hulu's The Season in the most unconventional way: by being utterly exhausted. In a wild twist of fate, his grueling 12-hour shoot for Sam Raimi's upcoming horror film Send Help transformed him into the perfect, unfiltered embodiment of his new character, Andrew Fung.
Pang recalled being 'shattered' after a demanding day on the Send Help set, working alongside Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien. He then had to jump onto a call for The Season right after. The character, Andrew Fung, is an abrasive figure in Hong Kong high society, infamous for having 'no inside voice' – he just says what's on his mind. In his depleted state, Pang found himself mirroring Andrew's unfiltered personality, saying exactly what he thought. 'I didn't have the mental capacity to have thoughts, and I was saying what was on my mind,' Pang revealed. This accidental method acting seems to have sealed the deal; the show's creators even had his picture on their wall from the start.
Playing Andrew Fung was a significant departure for Pang, who usually plays 'nice people, who are functional members of society.' Andrew is, by his own admission, a 'despicable human being' and a 'massive jerk.' He's a cheater and a liar, clawing his way through Hong Kong's elite. The challenge for the creative team, led by Yalun Tu, was making such a prickly character charismatic and fun to watch. Pang believes they succeeded, crafting a figure audiences will 'love to hate.'
“After a full 12-hour day of shooting, I was so exhausted, I kind of was Andrew Fung.”
