No Reboots: Adult Swim Plans Massive Original Push for 2027, Toonami Still Key

Adult Swim is gearing up for a huge 2027, with President Michael Ouweleen declaring it a “banger year” for original programming. He promises the network will deliver more half-hour originals than it has in the last decade. Crucially, Adult Swim is doubling down on new concepts, explicitly avoiding reboots and revivals based on direct fan feedback. “Keep going. Keep doing the things,” Ouweleen shared, quoting their audience research.
Meanwhile, the legendary Toonami block remains a critical piece of the puzzle. Ouweleen emphasized its importance, even as the team navigates a tough acquisition market dominated by streaming giants. Toonami's strategy is clear: commission “custom and bespoke” originals that other streamers might shy away from. These are the “slightly riskier, more auteur” projects.
The familiar Toonami architects—Gill Austin, Kim Manning, and Jason DeMarco—continue to steer the ship, aiming for one or two impactful projects each year. Fans can look forward to two more seasons of Ninja Kamui, while Lazarus, a standalone success, won't see a continuation. But Ouweleen hinted at “other things in development” for anime, promising big surprises. Toonami also serves as a home for unique series like My Adventures with Superman and the upcoming SuperMutant Magic Academy, showcasing its flexibility beyond just acquisitions.
“2027 is going to be a banger year for Adult Swim originals. Maybe the most number of half-hour originals that we've done in the last decade.”
Catzye Take
This is a significant shift away from the reboot trend dominating much of Hollywood, showing Adult Swim truly listens to its audience. Fans will want to watch what 'riskier, more auteur' projects Toonami greenlights. The focus on new anime originals is especially exciting, given the current streaming landscape.
