What it means
"Cute girls doing cute things" is a fans' term, sometimes affectionate and sometimes mocking, for gentle comedies about a group of girls, usually at school, who spend their time on friendship, hobbies and everyday life. There is little plot and almost no conflict.
Where it came from
Kiyohiko Azuma's Azumanga Daioh, a four-panel comedy, set much of the pattern in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara magazines specialise in such series, which is why they are also called kirara-kei, and many have been adapted as anime, such as K-On! and Laid-Back Camp.
What it looks like
A club or a hobby gives each series its focus: music, camping, cooking, mountain climbing. The comedy comes from the characters' personalities and small daily mishaps, and the mood is warm and relaxed.
Why it matters
The genre overlaps with iyashikei, healing stories designed to comfort. Its critics call it slight, but its readers value precisely what it offers: a peaceful world and the pleasure of time spent with friends.
The term by its numbers
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 118 across 5 words, reducing to 1. The weight sits in “things”, which carries 32 on its own and reduces to 5.
What the 1 brings is initiative. The reference files it as a first move. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 1's appetite for a clean, decisive beginning.
Heart's Desire 4, Personality 6: foundation underneath, responsibility on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The 1 asks you to notice what had to not exist for this to be possible. The 1 mistakes being first for being right. Several of these texts describe launches that mattered enormously for a year and then mattered to nobody. The other entries that reduce to 1 are collected on The Opening.
