Doujinshi are self-published works produced outside the commercial magazine system. Much of it is derivative fan work using existing characters; a significant portion is entirely original.
This is not a marginal practice. Japan's largest doujinshi convention is among the biggest gatherings of any kind in the country, drawing hundreds of thousands of attendees across a few days, with tens of thousands of participating circles.
Most fan doujinshi is technically copyright infringement, and it is generally tolerated rather than authorised. The prevailing view within the industry treats it as a training ground and a promotional force rather than a threat, and enforcement is rare and usually reserved for work that competes directly with the original.
A substantial number of professional mangaka began in doujinshi, and some prominent creator groups started as doujinshi circles before moving into commercial serialisation.
