What it means

Scanlation combines scan and translation. Groups acquire raw pages, translate the text, erase the original lettering, and typeset English in its place, then distribute the result online for free.

Why it grew

For a long stretch, most manga was simply unavailable in English, and what was available arrived years late. Scanlation filled a genuine gap, and a considerable amount of the English-speaking manga readership was built on it.

Why the picture has changed

Licensing has expanded enormously and simulpub has eliminated the speed advantage for major series. The gap scanlation originally filled is much narrower than it was, though it has not closed — unlicensed and out-of-print series remain genuinely unavailable otherwise.

The contested part

Scanlation is copyright infringement, and its effect on creator income is the subject of a long argument that neither side has settled with good data. Scanlation groups themselves have historically observed a norm of dropping a series once it is licensed.
