Yūjō, doryoku, shōri (友情・努力・勝利): friendship, effort, victory. The phrase is widely cited as the guiding principle of Weekly Shōnen Jump, said to come from a survey of young readers about what mattered to them, and it describes the shape of a classic Jump story.
A hero sets an impossible goal, gathers companions whose bonds become a source of strength, trains and suffers to improve, and wins, usually at the end of a long fight against a stronger opponent. Each element feeds the next: friendship makes effort bearable, and victory proves the effort was worth it.
It is easy to trace through Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto and My Hero Academia. Even series that seem to resist it, such as Chainsaw Man, are often read as arguments with it.
Critics point out that the formula can make struggle look like a matter of willpower and present relentless work as a virtue in itself. It is also one reason Jump series are so readable: everyone knows the rules being played with.
Set against the Pythagorean table, the term totals 137. Reduced, that is 11, a master number the system declines to reduce further. The weight sits in “Friendship,”, which carries 63 on its own and reduces to 9.
