ナルト
An orphaned ninja outcast, host to a sealed monster, works toward acceptance and leadership in a village whose history is considerably uglier than it teaches. The title reduces to 8 — the ledger.

8Eight — power. That is the reduction of this title, and the shelf it is read from.
Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1999 to 2014. Naruto Uzumaki is a loud, failing student at a ninja academy, ostracised because a destructive entity is sealed inside him, who wants to become the village's leader.
Antagonists with arguments. The series consistently gives its opponents coherent grievances, frequently rooted in the village system the protagonists defend. Its best-regarded antagonists are not evil so much as correct about something and wrong about what follows.
The cyclical thesis. Its central concern is inherited hatred — how each generation's revenge produces the next generation's grievance — and it takes this seriously enough to structure the endgame around it.
Design. Kishimoto's world has a strong visual identity, and his character silhouettes are distinctive enough to be recognisable at a glance.
Pacing is the main one. The series has long stretches where the plot advances little, and the anime adaptation's heavy use of filler compounded this reputation. Its power system also expands considerably over time, with late abilities that undercut earlier established limits.
The treatment of several major female characters is a persistent and reasonable complaint.
Along with two contemporaries it defined the shonen landscape of the 2000s internationally, and it remains one of the most common entry points into manga for readers outside Japan.
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 26 across 1 word, reducing to 8.
What the 8 brings is power. The reference files it as a reckoning. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 8's concern with power, money, and who is really in charge.
Heart's Desire 1, Personality 7: initiative underneath, inquiry on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
総画 strokes is 6, volumes is 72, a 9, years serialised is 16, a 7 and debut year is 1999, a 1 — none of which lands on the 8 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the gap between what a work is called and what it is.
The 8 asks you to follow the money before you judge the decision. The 8 measures what is countable and calls the rest noise. Several entries record industries that optimised themselves into exhaustion. The other entries that reduce to 8 are collected on The Ledger.
