Pen name
5The Turn · 32Also written: pseudonym, penname
The name a mangaka publishes under instead of their legal name, which in manga is very common.
5A 5 by its term: freedom seeker, and therefore the turn.
What it means
A pen name is a name an author uses in place of their legal name. In manga pen names are extremely common, and many famous artists are known only by them.
Why artists use them
A pen name can protect a creator's privacy, which matters in a culture where many artists never show their faces. It can separate work for different audiences, make a name easier to read or remember, or simply express a sense of humour. Some artists change their pen names over a career.
Examples
ONE, the creator of One-Punch Man, publishes under a single word. Buronson, the writer of Fist of the North Star, took his name from the actor Charles Bronson. CLAMP, the group behind Cardcaptor Sakura, publishes as a collective, and its members have changed their own pen names over the years. Others, such as Eiichiro Oda, publish under their real names.
Why it matters
For readers, a pen name is often all they know of an author, and some artists keep their real names and faces entirely private. It is one reason the manga industry can seem anonymous from the outside, even when its creators are household names.
The term by its numbers
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 32 across 2 words, reducing to 5. The weight sits in “Pen”, which carries 17 on its own and reduces to 8.
What the 5 brings is change. The reference files it as a turn. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 5's restlessness and hunger for change.
Heart's Desire 11, Personality 3: vision underneath, expression on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
The 5 asks you to ask what was abandoned, and whether it deserved to be. The 5 moves for the sake of moving. Not every break documented here led anywhere, and the reference says so where it did not. The other entries that reduce to 5 are collected on The Turn.
