CLAMP's Cardcaptor Sakura ran in the children's shojo magazine Nakayoshi from 1996 to 2000. Sakura Kinomoto opens a book in her father's study, scatters a set of magical cards, and is tasked with retrieving them.
Low antagonism. Unlike most magical girl series, it has almost no villain. The cards are obstacles rather than enemies, and conflicts are resolved through understanding what a card wants rather than defeating it. This gives the series an unusually gentle register.
Costume design as spectacle. Sakura wears a different outfit in nearly every episode-equivalent, designed by a friend who sews them. This is a structural excuse for CLAMP to do what they are best at, and the costume work is a genuine part of the appeal rather than incidental.
Emotional seriousness within a children's frame. The series handles several relationships, including queer ones, with a matter-of-factness notable for its period and its target readership.
CLAMP's style at its most refined — elongated figures, elaborate clothing, and layouts that abandon borders for overlapping composition. It is one of the most visually influential shojo works of the 1990s.
The widely seen anime differs in structure and adds material, and some English releases of the era altered relationships. The manga is the shorter and more direct version.
