Boichi
1The Opening · 37Born 1973
A South Korean artist working in Japanese manga, the artist of Dr. Stone and creator of Sun-Ken Rock.
1Reduced, this name gives 1. It sits on The Opening with the rest of a first move.
Career
Boichi was born in Seoul in 1973 and began his career in Korean comics before moving into the Japanese market. He made his name in Japan with Sun-Ken Rock (2006–2016), an action series about a Japanese man who becomes the boss of a Korean gang.
The work
He created the science-fiction series Origin, about a robot hiding among humans, and drew Dr. Stone (2017–2022), written by Riichirō Inagaki.
The style
Boichi is known for extremely detailed, technically brilliant art, with realistic anatomy, machinery and landscapes. In Dr. Stone he combined this with exaggerated comic faces.
Why he matters
He is one of the most prominent artists from outside Japan to succeed in mainstream Japanese manga, and his art is widely admired by other artists.
The name by its numbers
Set against the Pythagorean table, the name totals 37. Reduced, that is 1.
The reference files it as a first move. The number's contribution is beginnings, leadership, and the will to act alone — and with it the 1's appetite for a clean, decisive beginning, which is the thread the reference follows here.
Beneath the 1 sit two smaller figures: 6 in the vowels, 4 in the consonants. Responsibility underneath, foundation on the surface. The gap between them is where the subject is most interesting.
Born is 1973, a 2 — none of which lands on the 1 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the distance between how a name travels and how it was written.
Read on the 1's terms, this entry asks you to notice what had to not exist for this to be possible. The 1 mistakes being first for being right. Several of these texts describe launches that mattered enormously for a year and then mattered to nobody. The other entries that reduce to 1 are collected on The Opening.
