よしなが ふみ
Born 1971
The author of Ōoku, Antique Bakery and What Did You Eat Yesterday?, a sharp observer of gender, food and everyday power. The name reduces to 4 — the structure.
4Four — foundation. That is the reduction of this name, and the shelf it is read from.
Fumi Yoshinaga was born in 1971 in Tokyo and studied law at Keio University. She began in doujinshi and boys' love before moving into mainstream magazines in the late 1990s.
Antique Bakery, about four men running a cake shop, won the Kodansha Manga Award. Ōoku: The Inner Chambers, an alternate history in which women rule Edo Japan, became her major work. What Did You Eat Yesterday?, about a gay couple in Tokyo and the meals one of them cooks, has run since 2007 and won the Kodansha Manga Award as well.
Yoshinaga writes with dry wit and precise attention to how people actually talk and live. She is interested in power, between men and women, employers and employees, families and individuals, and in food as a way of caring for people.
Ōoku won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Grand Prize in 2009 and the James Tiptree Jr. Award, and both Ōoku and What Did You Eat Yesterday? have been adapted for television and film.
The arithmetic is unremarkable and worth doing anyway: 67 across 2 words, reducing to 4. The weight sits in “Yoshinaga”, which carries 45 on its own and reduces to 9.
What the 4 brings is foundation. The reference files it as a structure. Whatever else this entry is doing, it is doing it with the 4's insistence that what lasts must be built patiently.
Heart's Desire 11, Personality 11: the subject wants exactly what it appears to want, which is vision — an unusually undivided reading.
人格 core is 9, 総格 total is 18, a 9 and born is 1971, a 9 — none of which lands on the 4 the title gives. That disagreement is worth more than an agreement would be: it marks the distance between how a name travels and how it was written.
The 4 asks you to look for the constraint the subject was working inside. The 4 confuses the frame for the work. Structures outlive their usefulness, and several entries here describe conventions kept long past their reason. The other entries that reduce to 4 are collected on The Structure.
